Edward Winfield was born in Petersburg, Virginia ca. 1804 and moved to Texas in 1835. In 1836 he served as a major in the Texas army. After the war, he served as clerk of the Second Judicial District Court and as assistant secretary of the Senate for the second session of the Second Congress of the Republic of Texas.
